Can a Charade engine run a Rocky?
« on: November 13, 2017, 02:59:58 PM »
Hello everyone,

I recently acquired a non-running Rocky and have been working to turn it into a running Rocky. I replaced a fuel filter, head gasket, and distributor, and Oxygen sensor, temporarily sorta-fixed a voltage leak, and plugged some gaping holes in my exhaust manifold. Still, it wouldn't run like I thought it should: getting above 30 on hills is a real fight, and I have to downshift to second to get to 40 on the highway. Fourth and fifth gears go almost unused.

This was the state of the case for several weeks, until I got around to replacing the timing belt. At this point, I discovered that my rocky does not have a Rocky engine; Instead, someone has put a 4-cylinder Charade engine in there. After a couple hundred dollars invested and still not enough progress, I'm tempted to just decide that a Charade engine is much too small for a vehicle nearly the weight of a Hilux and cut my losses.

But before I do... Does anyone here run a Rocky with a Charade engine? Is the performance I'm seeing par for the course, as I believe, or can this engine move a rocky around if it is running properly? I don't need a racecar, but I would like something that can go 50-55 uphill on the highway.

Many thanks beforehand for any help you guys may provide!

While we're awaiting more qualified and experienced members to reply, I'll offer my newb observations:
- in case not everyone is aware, the Charade's 4 cylinder engine is only a 1.3L displacement
- even the 1.6L is on the small side of displacements/power for the Rocky
- I looked into swaps, because one could always use more power, and most swaps have been for larger displacements: GM EcoTech 2.0, GM 4.3 V6, GM SBC V8 etc
- the Bertone Freeclimber rebadged Daihatsus run BMW 4 cylinders or I6 diesels
- the slightly larger wheelbased European market Sportracks run 2.8 diesels
I'm thinking the Charade engine is too weak for the Rocky.

Wow, you already put in a bunch of $$$ and sweat equity.  You certainly could use it for the grocery runs, but I wouldn't take it on the Autobahn.

You can't do it.. the exhaust and the starter are on the other side
