ARCHIVE: spark plug socket

Hello all. Well we just completed the replacement of the head gasket on our Rocky and now to finish the process, we need to do a full tuneup. I have read a number of posts here that refer to the SST plug socket and was wondering if anyone knew a resource for these. I am sure they are somewhat common as this is not the only engine with this type of plug well but the couple of local places I have asked had no idea what I was talking about.

I use a standard spark plug socket with an extension for my 1/2 in drive.  After getting the plug all the way out of the threads, I use a small cable claw device to pull out the plug.  Most sockets have a rubber boot inside that holds the plug for extraction but mine is so worn out that it doesn\'t hold the plug anymore.

As above. On my 3/8ths set I use the smaller of the two plug sockets, and use electrical tape to hold the socket onto the extension.
But only issue I`ve ever had is the rubber seals on the HT leads coming off, and having to fabricate a tool to get them out. Which was a section of metal coat hanger bent at the one end and sharpened to a hook.

I use a standard plug socket with the rubber insert to remove the plugs.  I use a piece of 3/8\" fuel line to put the new plugs in and get them started.  Then i just use a standard deep well socket to tighten the plug.  This method prevents having to have a special tool.  The rubber insert will grip the old plug to pull it out.  I learned the fuel line trick from working on my VW 16v.  The deep well socket will allow you to tighten the plug without having to dig the socket out.  I hope this helps.  I truly believe sometimes simplicity is the best way.

Thanks all for the responses.
What I was running into was as JimBob described, the rubber boot of the plug wire was in the way.
After reading his response, I grabbed an old spoke off the bench, bent it as described, and pulled the rubber piece out, there was the normal spark plug waiting for a 5/8 spark plug socket.
Rocky is running good at the moment and after a tuneup later this week should be running like a top.

New wires should be easy to get I got my last set on Amazon they were made by bosh & then you wont have any issues.

I have changed my spark plug leads to this brand, and this also eliminates the problem of the rubber grommet sticking in the hole.
