"There is a strong gas smell coming into the passenger compartment. Where is this smell coming from?"

This smell is most likely coming from a cracked one-way safety valve (Saftey Valve Sub-assembly: part #77710-87302-000) located behind the rear quarter panel on the fuel tank filler side of a Daihatsu Feroza / Daihatsu Rocky / Daihatsu Sportrak (picture below). Repair or replace the valve. This should clear up your problem. If not, check for leaks in the hoses and check the fuel pump.

I had fuel smell in my Feroza for some time. I changed my fuel filler cap and checked the fuel lines but did not resolve the problem. Came across this article and after paying AUS$85.00 for the part and twenty minutes work problem solved. Small crack and pinhole size hole had been the cause of the problem. The best diagram to use as a reference is Page E5 with instruction on E6/7 of the Emmission Control System manual. The part is numbered (2) in that diagram
Thanks to Kevin for the solution.
