In about 1992 Daihatsu made a few changes to the Feroza (aka Rocky, Sportrak), one of the changes was to the engine - to improve the torque curve they added an Induction Box to the top of the motor between the Air Filter & the Inlet Manifold. Do you have this box ? ( see picture with arrow ) Some earlier model Daihatsu Feroza / Daihatsu Rocky / Daihatsu Sportrak didn't.
This black box puts a bump in the Torque curve to remove a big dip that otherwise occurs. I have attached a Dyno Chart I got from MRT to show the differences that a Ram Pod & this Black Box make. The first line is the Stock Daihatsu Feroza (aka Rocky, Sportrak) with Black Box - this is the lowest line at the finish of both Power ( top ) & Torque ( bottom ) graphs. Notice in particular the surge in torque in the Low-Mid Rev Range ( Red Arrow ) This is what the Black Box does. Notice also that this is the peak torque & how early it occurs compared to the other graphs. The second line is with a Ram Pod installed ( still has Black Box ) - notice the peak torque has moved lower in the Rev Range & increased quite a bit ( Blue arrow ) but then drops away before increasing again. Power is increased in the top end as well. The Third line is with a Ram Pod installed & the Black Box removed & a piece of 550mm long pipe installed instead. Notice how the Torque Curve drops away to a very low level early ( Green Arrow ) on until then building up to a very late peak torque, & power is increased quite a bit from late middle to high Revs. This characteristic is great for the High Rev Power but not real good for Low end Torque. The ideal Torque curve is a very flat line - & for off-roading one that peaks fairly early - note that this is not the last curve - it has the lowest torque early on & then peaks very late - great for power though !! I would say that if you don't have the Black Box then your Torque curve would be like the last curve. ( but much lower ) So it all depends what you are after - For Maximum Low End then I would fit the Ram Pod & leave the Black Box ( or get one if you don't have it ) - it fixes the flat spot at low - middle revs ( make the truck feel gruntier down low ) & still has a good increase in Max Power ( 54kW to 56.5kW = about 4.5% great for just a filter change !! ) If you are after Max Power though then dump the Black box & go straight from the Ram Pod with a 550mm long Tube to the Throttle Body. You lose some torque down low - but look at that Max. Power increase ( 54Kw to 62Kw = about 15% increase - unbelievable for a filter change !! but remember - all the Power Gain is above about 3500 RPM ) Some notes - all Dyno Figures are power & torque at the WHEELS, this is why they are lower than normal quoted power for Daihatsu Feroza / Daihatsu Rocky / Daihatsu Sportrak ( Quoted Power = 70kW at flywheel ) Also to convert kW to HP divide by 0.75 DYNO CHART Remember - these improvements are with the Ram Pod only !! They quote the exhaust as about 10% & the Billet Cam as about 8% & the Fuel Chip as about 8% so it is quite reasonable to expect the Rocky to be putting out up to 100Kw at the flywheel - ( standard is 70kW ) - in HP I think standard is about 95HP so this would push it up to 130HP - a big improvement !! This will not really impact on the engine life either as all you doing with these changes is make the engine work more efficiently. |
